New York Jets Dismiss Coach Robert Saleh Following 2-3 Start and Reported Friction with Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday following a disappointing start to the season and reported friction between him and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets announced that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich would step in as interim head coach. Saleh leaves with a 20-26 record after a little more than three seasons in charge.

"This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Jets’ head coach," team owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. "This was a difficult decision, but we are not meeting our expectations. I believe now is the right time for a change."

The team had entered the 2024 season with high expectations, buoyed by Rodgers' return after he missed most of 2023 due to a leg injury.

The Jets opened the season with a blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers but bounced back with wins over the struggling Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. However, back-to-back defeats to the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings, including a frustrating loss in London, have contributed to their struggles.

Rumors of tension between Rodgers and Saleh also surfaced. Saleh suggested that five false start penalties in the loss to Denver could have been caused by Rodgers’ complex pre-snap cadence. Additionally, during the win over New England, Rodgers appeared to reject a hug from Saleh after a touchdown, fueling speculation of discord between the two.
